Improves brain function and neuroplasticity

Learning to juggle stimulates multiple areas of the brain at the same time: vision, motor control, timing, and spatial awareness. As a result, juggling has been shown to physically change the brain. In a famous neuroscience study, adults who learned to juggle showed increased gray matter in brain regions responsible for visual motion processing and coordination. When they stopped practicing, those brain changes partially reversed, suggesting that juggling actively strengthens neural connections through practice. In other words: juggling literally grows parts of the brain.

Builds coordination and motor skills

Juggling requires precise coordination between the hands, eyes, and brain. Practicing juggling improves: • hand-eye coordination • reaction time • spatial awareness • bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together) These skills are essential not only for sports and physical activity, but also for everyday tasks and fine motor development in children.

Enhances focus and attention

Juggling demands sustained attention. If your focus drifts, the balls fall. For this reason, juggling can help strengthen: • concentration • cognitive control • working memory Some educational programs use juggling to help students develop better focus and classroom engagement.

Supports learning and academic skills

Research suggests that coordinated movement activities like juggling can support cognitive development in children. Motor skill training has been linked to improvements in:

Encourages resilience and growth mindset

One of the most powerful aspects of juggling is that everyone drops the balls at first. Learning to juggle teaches persistence and problem-solving: • Mistakes are part of the process • Progress comes through practice • Small improvements add up over time Students quickly learn that failure is simply feedback—a powerful lesson that applies far beyond juggling.

Promotes joy, movement, and well-being

Juggling is playful, social, and energizing. It encourages movement, laughter, and creative expression.

Research suggests that coordinated movement activities like juggling can support cognitive development in children. Motor skill training has been linked to improvements in: • reading readiness • math skills • executive function • attention regulation Activities that combine movement and learning often improve memory and engagement more than sedentary learning alone.

Juggling is playful, social, and energizing. It encourages movement, laughter, and creative expression. Because juggling is low-impact and adaptable, it can be practiced by people of many ages and ability levels. From classrooms to senior centers, juggling brings people together while supporting healthy bodies and minds.

Dr. Lana Bolin

Dr. Lana Bolin

Lana learned to juggle when she was 11 years old as part of an after-school program in Edina, MN, and juggling has been a major part of her life ever since. She has performed juggling in 8 countries, is a two-time finalist in the International Jugglers Association Juniors Championships, and holds the women’s 100 meter joggling world record (“joggling” = jogging + juggling!).

Prior to co-founding Coordination Juggling School, she taught juggling for the Jugheads Youth Juggling Company (Edina, MN), CircEsteem (Chicago, IL), Sorin Sirkus (Tampere, Finland), and Movement Caravan (Albuquerque, NM).

She holds a PhD in Biology, and is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of New Mexico where she studies ecology and evolution. When she’s not juggling, you’ll find Lana playing bass and saxophone in local bands, cooking new recipes from around the world, or riding her bike through the New Mexico backcountry.

Omar Ramirez

Omar Ramirez

Omar Ramirez

Omar learned to juggle at just five years old, and developed his skills through years of self-teaching and performance.

He is the founder and director of Circulo de Fuego, an entertainment company in Mexico, where he performed in over 500 shows.

In addition to performing as a juggler, he also choreographed and directed the shows, trained the company’s cast of jugglers and stilt-walkers, and designed and made masks and costumes for his performers. He has taught juggling with Movement Caravan in Albuquerque, NM, as well as countless children and adults he has met throughout his life.

Outside of juggling, Omar works as a farmer in Albuquerque’s South Valley and enjoys scuba diving, skydiving, and surfing.
